Ljubljan's after-dark lesbian hot spot is a two-room dance and bar space within the gay/straight Klub Tiffany, located in the "autonomous cultural zone" Metelkova Mesto (aka Metelkova City) — a sprawling series of indoor and outdoor social spaces devoted to alternative art, live music and club life, started in 1993. While Tiffany plays accessible dance-friendly tunes, Monokel specialises in techno. Co-run by NinaBelle and Nina Hudej, Monokel is the club venue of SKUC-LL, a cultural and activist organisation established in 1987 within the framework of the feminist group Lilit (as the first lesbian organisation in the former socialist Eastern European states). In 1997 SKUC-LL turned to autonomous activism. The wall behind the bar declares "I am that lesbian your mother warned you about". The two Ninas also run the famous central Ljubljana café-bar Pritlicje, also with a techno soundtrack. [see entry]
